istory of the line

  1. 1800s

    Industrial Leeds

    Developing from a small market town, Leeds (and specifically Holbeck) became an important international centre for the production of woollen cloth.

  2. 1882

    The Holbeck Viaduct is built

    Built for the London and Western Railway during the industrial revolution, the viaduct is an acclaimed feat of Victorian engineering. The route of 92 brick arches provided a vital transport link into the booming city centre.

  3. 1980s

    Falls out of use

    It has languished in distinguished neglect ever since.

  4. Today

    - Leeds 2023

    Our next aim is to have meanwhile use of the viaduct and temporary opening by at least 2023, to coincide with Leeds 2023:

The Structure

The viaduct is over 1.6km long, originates in the City Centre near Tower Works, runs through Holbeck and ends up at Gelderd Road near Elland Road.

What could it look like?

Early concepts by Edward Architecture explore ideas for how the space could be transformed.

We are investigating the idea of a phased, section-by-section approach. This could see smaller areas opened up at first, and then expanded over time.
