Reimagining the Leeds' industrial heritage: The Past, Present, and Future of the Holbeck Viaduct

Discover the rich industrial heritage of Leeds’ vacant 140-year-old landmark and explore the exciting community vision to transform it into an elevated green corridor, connecting Leeds City Centre to South Leeds, Holbeck, and Leeds United's home in Beeston. Built in 1882 for the London and North Western Railway, the 1.6km disused railway viaduct features 92 brick arches and bridges over eight roads, footpaths, and live rail lines. Since the last train crossed in 1983, this monumental structure has sat silent. Joe Raper (Heritage Consultant at Turley) and Graham Edward (Edward Riley Architects) will present the inspiring case for bringing the viaduct back to life as a community asset and linear park. Joe will share the viaduct’s role in Leeds' industrial past, while Graham will outline the future masterplan for a world-class green transport route connecting South Leeds and culminating in Leeds' own "Wembley Way" style route to Elland Road.
Event & Accessibility Information:
Venue: The talk will take place in the Chapter Hall on the 2nd floor of Northern Monk Refectory (The Old Flax Store).
Refreshments: The 2nd-floor bar will not be in operation, but attendees are welcome to purchase food and drinks from the main bar on the 1st floor to bring upstairs.
Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the Old Flax Store, there is no step-free access or lift available inside the building.
Travel & Parking: On-site parking is extremely limited and not recommended. The venue is a short walk from the Leeds Train Station South Entrance, and taxis can drop off directly outside the entrance.
